simultaneous virtual & in-person
teaching station
A dual screen from laptop to projector begins the process by displaying the Google Classroom to in-person students. A standing teaching station near the screen hosts a wireless keyboard and mouse to manipulate the desktop at the screen.
From this position, I can see my in-person students while simultaneously viewing my virtual students on an open Google Meet link from the classroom on a loaner Chromebook. I'm looking at everyone at the same time. I address virtual students just like in-person students, calling on them, giving feedback. I don't type in the chat to encourage their vocal participation.
Breakouts are easily created through the Meet Link on the extra Chromebook or at my teacher laptop.
On my teacher Chromebook, I open PowerSchool for attendance, BookSource and any other teaching tools I need. The teacher station is designed from two standing student desks. Caution: There is no plexi screen on the teacher stand because it will not fit safely.

Ain't No Mountain High Enough
Marvin Gaye, Tammi Terrell
Listen baby, ain't no mountain high
Ain't no valley low, ain't no river wide enough baby
If you need me call me no matter where you are
No matter how far don't worry baby
Just call my name I'll be there in a hurry
You don't have to worry
'Cause baby there ain't no mountain high enough
Ain't no valley low enough
Ain't no river wide enough
To keep me from getting to you babe
Remember the day I set you free
I told you you could always count on me darling
From that day on, I made a vow
I'll be there when you want me
Some way, some how
'Cause baby there ain't no mountain high enough
Ain't no valley low enough
Ain't no river wide enough
To keep me from getting to you babe
Oh no darling
No wind, no rain
Or winters cold can stop me baby, na na baby
'Cause you…

Thinking made visible.
Learners construct knowledge and skills when they perform tasks instead of merely being shown how to do them.
Graphic design is part art and part craft. Bigs, stimulate creativity in your Littles, but model steps in the craft of graphic design. When modeling the craft of design, teach the steps, but always allow the designer to create the work at the screen.
Littles, will create meaningful work and remember the steps of the process more readily if you do. Bigs, take on a teaching disposition, not a doing disposition. Every time you do something for a Little, you miss a teaching opportunity.

In a student-led organization, the transfer of knowledge is critical to your ongoing success.
Additionally, you may gauge how well you know a concept or process by your ability to explain well to another person.
As Bigs, each of you are mentors to Littles who will one day be Bigs. The more effort each of you puts into this relationship makes our team stronger. Bigs, take on a teaching disposition. Be mentors.
Littles, ask questions and always be open to learn.

In your work as a not-for-profit journalism organization, you all have roles. In your work, each of you encounters a host of problems that you have never encountered before. When you are faced with a problem, before asking for help, think of at least one possible solution. Your solution may not work, but it will help you learn to problem-solve. Don't just pass on your problems to your editors. When you talk over your problems, and exhibit that you have thought through possible solutions, you 1) begin to hard wire your brain to think as a innovator, and 2) show your editors that you are invested in the process and are able to take responsibility for your work. Take on a problem-solving disposition.
You have a host of strategies that you have acquired over time that help you in any given learning situation. When you are faced with a challenge, think back to what you already know and determine how you can apply that knowledge to this situation. Take on a learning disposition.
Uncaged would like to congratulate one of our former editors-in-chief, Evan Brune, on your recent promotion. #UareUncaged
